LAHORE: Following a day of Pakistan Army’s domination in the push-ups event of First International PACES Competition 2016, it was People’s Liberation Army’s turn to blow away their competition as Chinese athletes claimed top three positions in the Combat Efficiency Test (CET) at the Mehfooz Shaheed Garrison yesterday.

An ultimate assessment of endurance and agility, the CET was billed as the most interesting category in the entire competition. And it certainly lived up to the expectations as army-men from 18 countries battled hard to prove their mettle.
The primary objective of the participants in the test was to get from starting point to the finish line in the least possible time.

However, their path was littered with 11 different kinds of obstacles, including a zigzag track, jumping over a nine-meter ditch, carrying a casualty to a safe place, crawling through a 20-inch-high barred den, carrying an ammunition box, lobbing a grenade to clear the area and firing a round of shots at the target.

The fastest to complete the incredibly complex set of drills was China’s Huang Lei, who took 50.40sec to get to the finish line, followed by his compatriot Sun Dongfeng, who at 51.89sec was marginally late. Wang Jianhe, another Chinese soldier, rounded up the top three with his timing of 52.13sec.

The incredible show of athleticism by Chinese soldiers came a day after Pakistan Army secured two of the top three places in the push-ups event.

Next up in the PACES Competition are two mini-marathons, which will take place today.
The first one, which is open to male athletes of all age groups, is a 3.2km race that will begin from Askari-10 and end at Ayub Stadium, while the other one is a women and children-only marathon.

With a distance of 2km, the second marathon will start from Lahore Garrison and Golf and Country Club and end at Ayub Stadium.
